Purple Rain

SCAPE PUBLIC ART 2017

‘Purple Rain’ is a tactile installation designed for the brief of Christchurch city’s ‘SCAPE Public Art 2017’. This interactive installation links ideas of navigation with a sensory experience, encouraging members of the public to create their own pathway within the maze-like structure. Located on a pathway in Latimer Square, ‘Purple Rain’ encourages the public to throughly experience this multi-sensory space by walking through it or spending time submerged inside it.

This experience is created with dangling elastic latex tubes, filled with water that hang from the suspended temporary structure. The chosen colour of purple creates a calming atmosphere, intended to ease the publics mind making it easier for them to lose their sense of direction in the space. ‘Purple Rain’ re-introduces the idea that ‘play’ is ageless and offers an installation that can be enjoyed by public members of all ages.
