Te Kotare

THE LEGACY PROJECT

Te Kotare is a legacy project in remembrance of the late Jenny Shearer, a local Early Childhood educator, who was passionate about incorporating Te Reo into her classes. She wrote 10 beautiful waiata in Te Reo Māori for the children to sing and hoped to record her songs and print a songbook with words/translations, which explained the stories behind her songs.

Our team of 18 Massey COCA (College of Creative Arts) students decided to take this opportunity to help Jenny’s dreams come true by not only designing a songbook, but by pushing the brief further. Collectively we designed a songbook, a motion graphic sing-along lyric video, a teacher’s handbook, a corporate identity (including a brand, logo and website), a strategic plan and an immersive space.

Being apart of the ‘immersive space team’, we wanted to increase the scope of this project by designing an immersive and interactive space that drew in members of the public. Acting also as a marketing campaign, this design was situated in a container and would be placed on Wellington’s waterfront and Cuba Street. People would be able to enter the container and place themselves right into the Te Kotare songs and stories, physically seeing themselves on the screen singing and dancing in these graphic motion videos. This space was an opportunity for tamariki to learn the Te Kotare songs before they were introduced into their schools, as well as an opportunity for the public to find out more about sponsoring a local early childhood centre or primary school.
